The BMI (Body Mass Index) has become a useful tool in managing weight and body fat percentage in the last 20 years. Calculating it requires only simple arithmetic and can be performed by anyone. It’s important because it provides an objective measurement that, combined with the appropriate scale for age and body type, helps someone manage their body weight more scientifically.
Judgments about body weight can easily become clouded by emotionalism. It’s good to be passionate about managing your body, but you need to get a good grounding in facts, first. BMI is an important tool for achieving that goal.

If you have concerns about your health, chances are you’ve heard or read about body mass index, or BMI. Up until the 1980’s, body mass index wasn’t the standard used to determine healthy weights. Before BMI, simple tables were used –one for men and one for women– to calculate weight per inch of height. But since BMI was introduced and used regularly, starting in the 1980’s and gaining in popularity in the 1990’s (when the vast problem of obesity came more into the public eye), we’ve had a more accurate way to test for obesity and healthy weights.

With winter fast receding for another year, the approaching summer brings with it the promise of longer evenings, warm sunshine and an opportunity for the kids to escape the confines of the home and emerge to enjoy playing outside during the long summer nights.
However, with the advances in digital entertainment and coupled with the fears faced by parents in letting their children play outside unsupervised, many youngsters will spend the coming evenings in front of the television or video games console rather than running amok outside with their friends. This alarming reluctance to venture outdoors to play tag, hide and seek, cowboys and Indians or the current game of choice is being widely attributed to the rising tide of obesity in our youngsters.

Since awareness of the dangers of obesity became widespread, many strategies have emerged to counteract the condition including measuring the body mass index of an individual. However, there was no concrete basis that determines if a person is in fact obese or not. People back then assumed that extreme fatness is obesity.
This changed in 1996 when a Belgian statistician and anthropometrist Adolphe Quetelet developed the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI estimates the amount of body fat in order to determine obesity and its severity much like a thermometer measuring the degree of temperature.
