I’ve been planning on volunteering at a local hospital during this summer as part of a bunch of stuff I want to do for medical school. However, it seems that everyone applied last month and now there are absolutely no positions available near me.
Does anyone know of some alternative volunteer work that would show that I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine?

Volunteer at Siddhi Memorial Hospital in Kathmandu

SMF is a non governmental community based organization which started with the Siddhi Memorial Health Hospital, where they provide socially disadvantaged women and children with health care, education and health promotion. They provide 24 hour care free of charge to children with 10 inpatient pediatric beds. The hospital also provides outpatient services in gyneacology and obstetrics as well as diagnostic services, clinical pathology and ambulance retrieval with referral to larger hospitals when necessary. The hospital also runs health camps in more remote areas of Bhaktapur and provides health education and awareness on HIV/STD’s/family planning/nutrition/health & hygene. SMF has a project for the elderly called the Siddhi Shaligram Briddhasram. This elderly home provides 24 hour residential care, medical attention, counseling, and activities promoting socialization

Family planning services, as well as, outreach programmes to remote areas in the community. This placement needs volunteers to help with out patient department duties. Also, attend to pregnant women, nursing mothers and their babies. This placement requires volunteers who have a medical background. Bobikuma is an enchanting community; filled with an energy that captivates the soul. While staying in Bobikuma you will be taken in as part of the community due the small town feel. Most of the community members of Bobikuma are farmers; therefore there is a possibility for you to learn how farming is done in Ghana.

Volunteer in Abofour Health Care Center in Ghana
Sunday, January 3rd, 2010This organisation details with the administrative aspect of health care in the Offinso District. Coordinates all the hospitals, maternity wards and clinics in the area to provide effective health care to residents.This placement requires volunteers as there is lack of manpower in the different department. Abofour is a small community of approximately 7,000 people and it is located approximately an hour and half from Kumasi. Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana and is situated in the central region of Ghana. Abofour is one of the 5 urban centers of the offsino area. The Abofour Health Clinic is a 24 hour maternity and general clinic. It provides medical assistance to 13 small rural villages throughout the Offinso area.
